UCC GAA is delighted to implement the GAA One Club guidelines, which is aimed at streamlining the activities of the GAA, Ladies Gaelic Football Association and the Camogie Association and enhancing further co-operation. For more information on the GAA One Club Guidelines click here.

UCC GAA boasts competitive teams across all five codes: Camogie, Gaelic Football, Ladies Gaelic Football, Hurling and Handball. 

Gaelic Football

UCC Gaelic Football has a rich tradition in third level competitions. With the Sigerson Cup being the trophy for the premier Gaelic Football Championship among Colleges, ITs and Universities there’s great excitement each spring as the tournament takes place.  

Gaelic Football is one of the most popular sports in Ireland and, here in UCC, that is no different. There are five teams in the college which consist of two fresher’s teams as well as a Senior, Intermediate and Junior team. All levels are catered for so whether you want to play at the highest level and compete for the Sigerson Cup or just want to get a bit of extra training in, come along and try out.

UCC Gaelic Football has a rich tradition in third level competitions. Having won the Sigerson Cup 21 times since the competition started, UCC can certainly hold its own at the highest level in third-level football. UCC Gaelic Football also compete in the Cork Senior Football Championship and have won the title ten times, most recently in 2011.

The UCC Gaelic Football team achieved a huge victory in 2019 when they defeated St Mary’s, Belfast in the Sigerson Cup final. This led to them achieving half of the historic double win of Sigerson and Fitzgerald. This unique double was last won in 1988 when UCC won out in both cups. Ladies Gaelic Football

As one of the fastest growing women's sports in the country, UCC Ladies Football club is at the forefront of this rise. With a long association with some of the most recognised ladies' footballers in the country, UCC Ladies Football Club is expanding each year.

Located in the centre of a county that has not only been one of the most successful teams in Ladies Gaelic Football, but in any code, in recent times, UCC Ladies Football Club has always been competitive in third level GAA competitions.

Having the privilege of being home to All-Star players and inter-county stars, UCC Ladies Football is an extremely hard-working club.

Outside the competitive aspect of the sport, ladies Gaelic football is a sport that incorporates a huge amount of teamwork into the game and is a sport that really builds a sense of community and team spirit among a team.

So, whether you want to join the senior team or just want a bit of extra practice, UCC Ladies Gaelic Football is the club for you. During the college year, the main competitive focus of the club is the O’Connor Cup, the premier third level ladies Gaelic football competition. Hurling

UCC Hurling is one of the oldest clubs in UCC, proudly wearing the famous Skull and Crossbones when we represent the college on the playing field. The UCC Hurling Club plays for one of the most famous trophies in GAA, the Fitzgibbon Cup, which is the premier competition in hurling between Higher Education Institutions. UCC are currently top of the roll of honour with 42 titles.

The Fitzgibbon Cup is named after Edwin Fitzgibbon who was a former lecturer in philosophy in UCC. in 2019 UCC hurlers achieved a remarkable joint double with UCC Gaelic footballers by securing the Fitzgibbon cup. UCC defeated Mary I in the cup final to bring home the Fitzgibbon for the 42nd time. This means UCC have achieved the unique Sigerson and Fitzgibbon double, last seen in 1988 when UCC last brought home both cups.

UCC Hurling caters for all grades so everyone is welcome and there is a role for whoever is interested, whether you are looking to touch up on your hurling skills or are playing at an elite intercounty level. There are currently six teams in the college: a senior, intermediate and junior team, as well as three fresher teams.

UCC has always been very competitive across the board and also competes in the Cork Senior Hurling Championship, winning the title twice. For more information about hurling in UCC, follow us on social media and email any questions you may have.

Camogie

UCC Camogie club is one of the oldest clubs in the existence of the Camogie Association, who have the proud record of taking part in the first ever intercollegiate camogie match versus UCD on 18th April 1915. Since then, UCC has won 31 Ashbourne Cup Titles with the first success in 1919 and the most recent in 2003 and a Purcell Cup Title in 2014. Impressively, UCC won six in-a-row in both the 1920s and the 1970s. UCC holds the record for the longest reign in the history of the Ashbourne Cup competition.

Famous names to don the UCC skull and crossbones jersey include Cork’s Pat Moloney-Lenihan who was selected on the camogie team of the century, Kathleen “Kitty” Buckley whose record of six goals in an All-Ireland Senior Final still stands and Elizabeth “Lil” Kirby who was the fifth President of the Camogie Assiciation and All-Stars such as Pamela and Katrina Mackey, Una O’Dwyer, Emer McDonnell, Rachel Moloney, Joanne O’Callaghan, Una O’Donoghue and Susan Earner to name but a few.

UCC Camogie club offers a great opportunity to meet many new friends and have mighty fun while competing in Intervarsities and league campaigns.

Handball

UCC GAA Handball is open to beginner as well as seasoned players. With a strong cohort of talented players, it is a great opportunity for beginners to get involved. UCC Handballers have experience playing at top intervarsity level as well as inter county and provincial level with a select few playing at competitive level in the USA.

UCC Handball Club competes in three intervarsities during the academic year. Training takes place in St. Finbarr’s GAA Club in Togher. It’s never too late to start a new sport.
