Sigerson Cup Round Up
The Sigerson Cup got underway this week with a number of Preliminary and First Round games taking place as the various colleges attempted to move one step closer to the finals weekend, which will be held on the 20th/21st February in the Mardyke, UCC.
Two preliminary round games took place on Tuesday with NUIG defeating IT Blanchardstown 0-17 to 1-04 while Athlone IT overcame Trinity College Dublin 3-10 to 0-10.
Current holders and this year’s hosts UCC also began their campaign on Tuesday against neighbours CIT and despite an early scare they advanced to the knockout stages with a comfortable 3-15 to 1-6.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, GMIT caused somewhat of a surprise result defeating 2013 champions DIT with a thrilling 0-14 to 1-09 win.
The final clash of the opening round saw IT Sligo secure a 1-09 to 0-08 extra time win away to Queen’s University, Belfast on Wednesday night. Credit to both teams for their efforts despite the heavy snow which made conditions extremely difficult. IT Sligo prevailed in the end to set up an exciting quarter final clash with UCC in two weeks time.
Next week the remainder of the colleges enter the competition with the completion of the Round 1 Fixtures.
Three games take place on Tuesday. IT Tralee face IT Carlow, Athlone IT following their win over Trinity College Dublin will travel to UCD while Maynooth University play UL.
The final two games of the round take place on Wednesday with NUIG facing St Mary’s Belfast while last year’s beaten finalists UUJ take on this year’s league winners DCU in what should be a thrilling encounter.
With UCC, NUIG, Athlone IT, GMIT and IT Sligo progressing this week, the question for next week is who can move a step closer to securing their place at the weekend stages in three weeks time?

Both semi finals of the Sigerson Cup will take place in the Mardyke on Friday 20th February with the final taking place the following day, Saturday 21st February in the Mardyke.
