Sigerson Cup Weekend in UCC
On home soil, UCC will be bidding strongly to reach a fifth final in six years when the Sigerson Cup weekend begins tomorrow. Ten players who featured in the 2014 Sigerson decider are back available again this year. Last spring’s success was the springboard for Paul Geaney to become an All-Ireland winner with Kerry, Brian O’Driscoll and Ian Maguire to force their way into the Cork senior team, while Fearghal McNamara and Sean Kiely won county senior titles in Kerry and Cork respectively.
UCC’s semi final opposition, however, IT Carlow having qualified for the weekend stages of the Sigerson Cup for the first time in their history will hope to make it another step further. Having overcome IT Tralee and UL in previous sides and with talented players such as Shane Murphy, Mark Sherry, Liam Boland and Barry McHugh on their side, they will certainly give themselves every chance of making a first ever final.
The roll call of inter county players between UCD and DCU is impressive. Monaghan’s Ryan Wylie, Meath’s Paraic Harnan, Westmeath’s John Heslin, Dublin’s Jack McCaffrey, Kildare’s Niall Kelly, Laois player Colm Begley, Galway’s Tom Flynn, Tipperary’s Steven O’Brien, Roscommon’s Enda Smith and Mayo’s Diarmuid O’Connor are all in action.
It’s a game that is bristling with potential, the curtain-raiser to the hosts showdown with the newcomers. Four sides left in the Sigerson race and plenty at stake.
